R Adams Cowley (1917-1991) was an influential American surgeon who pioneered emergency medicine and shock trauma treatment. Known as the 'Father of Trauma Medicine', he established the first trauma center at the University of Maryland and introduced the 'Golden Hour' concept for trauma care. Cowley improved civilian medical evacuations with helicopters and founded Maryland's statewide EMS system. His contributions included performing one of the first open-heart surgeries and inventing a surgical clamp and a pacemaker prototype. His work significantly advanced trauma care and emergency medical services in the United States.
