R. M. Hare, or Richard Merwin Hare, was a British moral philosopher who served as the White's Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Oxford from 1966 to 1983. Born on March 21, 1919, and passing away on January 29, 2002, he was influential in the field of meta-ethics during the latter half of the 20th century. He is noted for developing prescriptivism as a meta-ethical theory and advocating for preference utilitarianism, supported by his analysis of the formal features of moral discourse. Many of his students became prominent philosophers.
