Rachel Sherwood was an American poet born on January 4, 1954, in Washington, D.C. She grew up in Southern California and attended California State University, Northridge, where she co-founded Angel’s Flight literary journal. Her poem “Mysteries of Afternoon and Evening” won a contest in 1978. Sherwood was a graduate student and English composition teacher at Northridge until her tragic death in a car accident on July 5, 1979. Her friends established the Rachel Sherwood Poetry Prize in her memory, and her work continues to be recognized for its unique voice.
