After completing high school, he studied mechanical engineering at the Czech Technical University, graduating in 1970. He was a member of the renowned band Rangers from 1966 to 1973. He left the band to pursue a solo career and has performed with various backing bands. He frequently performs with his son, Radek Tomášek mladší, who is also a successful musician. Additionally, he has acted, notably playing a museum director in the 2009 Czech film Pamětnice.
