She was the first female cabinet minister in Mauritius and played a significant role in advocating for women's rights. Educated at the University of Natal, she opposed apartheid and engaged in anti-discrimination efforts through the Indian National Congress and African National Congress. After marrying Dr. Valaydon Poonoosamy, she settled in Mauritius, where she became a central figure in the Labour Party and was elected to Parliament in 1975, leading the Ministry of Women's Affairs.
