Rafael Benshalom (originally Richard Friedl) was an Israeli diplomat born on May 6, 1920, in Cluj, Romania, and passed away on September 5, 1996, in Israel. A Hungarian Jew from Transylvania, he was active in the Hashomer Hatzair movement during his youth and participated in the Jewish resistance in Hungary during the Holocaust. He later served as Israel's first ambassador to Romania in 1969 and was involved in the Mossad for Jewish immigration, assisting Holocaust survivors in reaching Israel and supporting the military needs of the emerging Jewish state.
