He was born on July 11, 1924, in Stord, Norway, and graduated as dr.philos. from the University of Oslo in 1953 with a thesis on social norms and roles. Rommetveit served as a professor at the University of Oslo from 1959 until 1994 and authored the influential textbook 'Språk, Tanke og Kommunikasjon' in 1970, which has been widely used in Norway. He was also a fellow of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
