His research focused on insects, particularly beetles (Coleoptera), and he specialized in click beetles (Elateridae) with a significant emphasis on Southeast Asian species. Schimmel described many new species to science, and collaborated with Italian entomologist Giuseppe Platia on the revision of Oriential species of the genus Melanothus. His extensive beetle collection comprised over 250,000 specimens, mainly of click beetles, contributing greatly to the field of entomology.
