He was the son of former Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and the husband of Dariga Nazbayeva, Nazarbayev's daughter. In 2007, he faced serious allegations of extortion and kidnapping in Kazakhstan, which resulted in a 20-year prison sentence in absentia in early 2008. Aliyev was found dead in a prison cell in Vienna on February 24, 2015, an event his lawyers deemed suspicious, calling for a detailed investigation into the circumstances of his death.
