Ralph Abernathy (March 11, 1926 - April 17, 1990) was an American civil rights activist and Christian minister, known for leading the nonviolent civil rights movement. He was a close friend and mentor to Martin Luther King Jr., co-founding the Montgomery Improvement Association and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. After King's assassination, Abernathy became the SCLC's president and led the Poor People's Campaign in Washington, D.C. He also addressed the UN on global peace and retired as SCLC president in 1977. Abernathy authored a controversial autobiography in 1989 and passed away from heart disease in 1990.
