Thompson and Eric Hobsbawm. Born in Belgium to Polish Jewish immigrant parents, he fled to Britain in 1940 to escape Nazi persecution. Miliband became involved in leftist politics and published influential works on Marxist theory and critiques of capitalism, including 'Parliamentary Socialism' (1961) and 'The State in Capitalist Society' (1969). His sons, David and Ed, later became prominent figures in the Labour Party.
