Ralph Oliver Patt was an American jazz guitarist known for introducing major-thirds tuning, which simplified learning the fretboard and chords. His innovative tuning was inspired by the atonal music of Arnold Schoenberg as well as the jazz styles of John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. Patt graduated with a geology degree from the University of Pittsburgh and later worked as a geologist and hydrologist, often consulting on projects related to the U.S. Department of Energy.
