W. Ralph "Pest" Welch was an American football player and coach, known for his tenure as head coach at the University of Washington from 1942 to 1947. He led the team to a record of 27–20–3 and took his squad to the Rose Bowl in 1943. A halfback at Purdue, he followed his coach James Phelan to Washington as an assistant in 1930. Welch gained popularity among players for his talent scouting ability before his passing in 1974.
