Randall Jarrell (1914-1965) was an American poet and critic whose experiences in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II influenced his early poetry collections, including 'Little Friend' (1945) and 'Losses' (1948). His later works, particularly 'The Lost World' (1965), convey a sense of battle against time with an indifferent universe. He excelled in translating poets he admired and wrote critically about American poets such as Robert Frost and Walt Whitman. Most of his critical writings were compiled posthumously in 'Kipling and Auden and Others' in 1980. Born in Nashville, Tennessee.
