Before his administrative role, he had a successful career as a professional Canadian football player. Ambrosie was an offensive guard who played for teams including the Calgary Stampeders, Toronto Argonauts, and Edmonton Eskimos. He was notably chosen as the second overall pick in the 1985 CFL Draft and participated in 142 professional games during his nine-season career, securing a Grey Cup championship.
