Rauf Denktaş was a Turkish Cypriot politician, lawyer, and judge, born on January 27, 1924. He served as the Vice President of Cyprus after being elected in 1973 and became the first President of Northern Cyprus from 1983 to 2005. Denktaş is regarded as the spiritual father of the Turkish Cypriots. He passed away on January 13, 2012, at the age of 88 due to health complications following a stroke that resulted in paralysis.
