He is affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party and serves as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly representing the Basavanagudi constituency in Bangalore. In the 2019 Indian general election, he was among those recommended to contest from the Bangalore South Lok Sabha constituency, but ultimately his nephew Tejasvi Surya was selected for the candidacy.
