Ray David Owen (October 30, 1915 – September 21, 2014) was an educator and scientist known for his discovery of unusual 'mixed' red blood cell types in cattle twins in 1945. This finding launched contemporary fields in immunology and organ transplantation. Owen's work, published in the journal Science, demonstrated that the immune system recognizes self-cells during embryonic development, paving the way for research in immune tolerance and early tissue grafting. Despite not being awarded the 1960 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, he was acknowledged by Sir Peter Medawar for his contributions.
