Ray Goins was an American bluegrass banjoist born on January 3, 1936. He began his music career in the 1940s after being inspired by string band music. Singing publicly at 16, he played with notable bands like the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers and Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys. Eventually, he formed the Goins Brothers with his brother, Melvin. After suffering a heart attack in 1994 and semi-retiring in 1997, he occasionally performed with Melvin & Windy Mountain.
