He earned his bachelor's degree from San Diego State College in 1955 and completed his Ph.D. at Oregon State College in 1960. After a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT, he became an Assistant Professor at North Dakota State University in 1961 and later a Professor at the University of Hawaii in 1965. He utilized radioactive isotopes to study solvation and conducted measurements on ion exchange kinetics.
