Otis Ray McIntire was an influential American chemical engineer known for his development of extruded polystyrene foam (XPS), marketed as Styrofoam, while working at Dow Chemical Company. He earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1940 and had a long career at Dow, becoming a research director and eventually a director of technology and purchasing. His innovative work during World War II led to the creation of a flexible and lightweight polystyrene material crucial for insulation and buoyancy applications, which was patented in 1944.
