Raymond Paley was an English mathematician born in Bournemouth on January 7, 1907. A brilliant student at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, he won the Smith Prize in 1930 and became a fellow of Trinity College. His notable works include the Paley method for constructing Hadamard matrices, contributions to the Paley-Wiener theorem in harmonic analysis with Norbert Wiener, and collaborations with Antoni Zygmund on Fourier series. Paley died in a skiing accident on April 7, 1933, at Banff, Alberta, due to an avalanche, witnessed by companions at the mountain's base.
