He gained notoriety as the Republican nominee in the 1995 Chicago mayoral election. Prior to his political endeavors, he performed as a clown named "Spanky the Clown." His candidacy in 1995 caused embarrassment among Republicans, leading to a change in legislation that made subsequent Chicago mayoral elections nonpartisan.
