He is recognized as the last native speaker of the Catawba language, despite claims that he may have been a fraud. The Catawba, from the eastern Siouan tribes, settled in what is now the Southern United States along the North and South Carolina border around the mid-17th century. Their language experienced extinction in the 1960s.
