He served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1973 to 1981 while studying at Iowa State University and Drake University Law School. A moderate Republican, he chaired the state government committee during his last term. Following his legislative career, he worked at Iowa State University and the University System of Maryland, eventually holding the position of vice president for institutional advancement. He is the son of Harold Crawford, a former professor at Iowa State.
