René Mary Shadbolt was a distinguished New Zealand nurse and hospital matron, born on April 26, 1903. She notably served as one of three New Zealand nurses in the Spanish Civil War and married Willi Remmel, a German anti-fascist, in 1938. During World War II, she worked at a military convalescent hospital, and from 1949 to 1967, was matron at Hokianga Hospital. In 1969, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions. She is commemorated with a scholarship and a park named in her honor.
