Rene Sarmiento is a Filipino lawyer born on December 15, 1953, in Virac. He was an active human rights lawyer during the regime of Ferdinand Marcos. After the fall of Marcos, Sarmiento became a member of the constitutional commission. He also served as a presidential advisor in peace negotiations in the Philippines. From 2006 to 2013, he was one of the members of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in the Philippines.
