Renier van Rooyen was a South African entrepreneur born in Kenhardt on November 28, 1931. He worked as a clerk for the Department of Justice before founding Pep Stores in Upington. Under his leadership, Pep Stores expanded into the Pepkor group, which he sold to Christo Wiese in 1981. At that time, Pepkor operated over 500 stores and employed around 10,000 workers. He passed away on November 5, 2018, leaving behind his wife Alice, two sons, a daughter, and at least four grandchildren.
