He was the chairman and managing director of the Karan Group of Companies, known as the largest global exporter of coir products. He played a crucial role in modernizing the coir industry in India. In 2006, the Ravi Karunakaran Memorial Museum was established in Alappuzha, Kerala, by his wife, showcasing a collection accumulated by the family over generations.
