Riad al-Turk (1930-2024) was a prominent Syrian communist political opponent and human rights lawyer. He served as the general secretary of the Syrian Communist Party (Political Bureau) since its establishment and was the head of the Syrian Democratic People's Party. Known as one of the key figures of the Syrian opposition since the 1980s, he was imprisoned under the regimes of various leaders including Adib al-Shishakli, Gamal Abdel Nasser, Hafez al-Assad, and Bashar al-Assad. He was often referred to as the 'Mandela of Syria'.
