Riad Seif, born in 1946 in Damascus to a middle-class family, initially pursued industrial work after secondary school instead of completing his science degree at Damascus University. He founded the successful textile factory '400 Textile Factory' and the brand 'Saiza', making it one of Syria's largest ready-made clothes companies. In 1994, he entered Syrian politics as an independent MP and was re-elected in 1998, becoming a prominent critic of the economy. Seif was notably imprisoned for five years after exposing financial misconduct in a mobile phone deal in 2001.
