He served as a lieutenant commander during the Vietnam War, flying 22 combat missions on the USS Ticonderoga, earning two Air Medals and the Combat Action Ribbon. After his capture in 1967, he was a prisoner of war and received the Silver Star for bravery. After military service, he became a licensed clinical social worker and a national certified addiction counselor, also chairing the Department of Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee on POWs from 1989 to 1995.
