Richard Davisson was an American physicist renowned for his contributions to cosmic ray and subatomic particle detection. Born to a Nobel laureate father, he participated in the Manhattan Project during WWII. He developed a cosmic ray machine as a Cornell graduate student, and at the University of Washington, aided in constructing the muon detector for the ATLAS experiment in the Large Hadron Collider. Despite not holding a PhD, he had a significant career in theoretical and experimental physics. He retired in 2000 and had a long-standing marriage with a psychiatric social worker.
