He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1958 and held various officer ranks throughout his career, including Commanding General of III Corps. Graves served two tours in the Vietnam War and held multiple staff and command positions, including during the Gulf War. After retiring in 1991, he joined General Dynamics Corporation and worked in Saudi Arabia before his final retirement in 1998.
