Richard Wayne Kowalewski Jr. was an American soldier of Polish descent, born on March 31, 1973, in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. He served as a Private First Class in Company B of the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Kowalewski was killed in action during the UNOSOM II mission in Mogadishu on October 3, 1993. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice. Due to the difficulty of pronouncing his last name, his fellow soldiers nicknamed him "Alphabet."
