Richard Noyes Viets (born November 10, 1930) served as the United States Ambassador to Tanzania in 1979 and Jordan in 1981. He was nominated for the ambassadorship to Portugal in 1987, but the Senate did not act on his nomination. During the Senate Foreign Relations Committee review, there were disputes involving Senator Jesse Helms regarding grievances against Viets and tax issues. Viets joined the Foreign Service in 1955 and retired in 1987.
