He is a member of the Labour Party and served as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Ochil constituency from 1999 to 2003. He later represented the Mid Scotland and Fife region from 2007 to 2016. Throughout his political career, Simpson has been involved in various health-related issues and contributed to policies impacting public health in Scotland.
