Born in Victoria, British Columbia on December 3, 1951, he developed an interest in spiders from a young age, collecting his first tarantula at 13. In addition to his primary role as Chief Constable for a local Animal Humane Society, he actively collects, breeds, photographs, and studies theraphosid spiders. West has traveled extensively, visiting over 27 countries to document these creatures in their habitats and has contributed to several documentaries on tarantulas, describing multiple genera and species.
