A Republican, he serves in the Louisiana Senate representing East Baton Rouge Parish after previously being a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives. In the 2018 special election for secretary of state, he finished fourth. Edmonds has a background as a pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Shreveport and is connected to the Louisiana Family Forum. He currently serves as the Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church of McComb.
