She hails from a large Catholic family in North Brabant and gained recognition as a member of the Dutch Parliament, notably for giving many guided tours of the parliamentary building to her constituents. Before her parliamentary career, she was very involved in Catholic women's organizations, including the Catholic Rural Women and the CDA Women's Council, and served as the faction leader in the municipal council of Schaijk. She focused on issues concerning self-employed entrepreneurs, traffic, and the environment.
