A former member of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Uttar Pradesh, he switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party in February 2024. He served as an MLA for Jalalpur from 2017 to 2019 and was the Leader of the BSP in the Lok Sabha in January 2020 after previously being the Deputy Leader. He reported assets worth 30 crores in his election filings.
