She graduated with a degree in political science from the University of Helsinki in 1970. Sumu worked as a journalist for Maakansa and served as editor-in-chief for HISC Magazine. Additionally, she contributed to Ylioppilaslehti in various roles. In 1974, she wrote a biography of her grandfather, Jarl Sundqvist. She was married to Ilkka Sumu.
