Roald Hoffmann is an American chemist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1981. Born on July 18, 1937, in Złoczew, Poland, he is a Jewish Holocaust survivor who immigrated to the United States in 1949. He was named after the famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. Hoffmann studied at Columbia University, earning a B.Sc. in 1958 and an M.Sc. in 1960, before obtaining his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1962. Currently, he is a professor at Cornell University and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
