Robert Abbott was an American game creator and computer scientist born on March 2, 1933. He initially worked as a programmer using the IBM 360 assembler language before focusing on game design from the 1950s onwards. His notable creations include the chess variant Ultima, the board games Epaminondas and Confusion, and particularly the card game Eleusis, popularized by Martin Gardner. Abbott published a book in 1963 detailing the rules for several of his card games and Ultima, and he created logical mazes, the first of which appeared in Scientific American.
