Robert B. Ingebretsen (1948-2003) was a pioneering figure in digital sound development. He built robots as a teenager and collaborated with Thomas G. Stockham on sound restoration techniques. Ingebretsen co-produced one of the first digital films with Ed Catmull in 1972 and developed the first practical digital audio editing system at Soundstream Inc. He received a Scientific and Engineering Award in 1999 for his contributions to digital audio. After Soundstream dissolved, he spent years founding tech companies and, later, worked on software for hand-held devices.
