Robert Eads (1945–1999) was a transgender man from the United States whose life and death were the subjects of the award-winning documentary Southern Comfort (2001). Eads transitioned at an advanced age and was consequently not advised to undergo gender-affirming surgery. He was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1996, but due to societal stigma faced by transgender individuals, over a dozen doctors refused to treat him, fearing it would harm their practice. By the time he received treatment in 1997, the cancer had metastasized, making any treatment futile.
