He served as the president of AT&T from 1986 to 1988 and was its CEO and chairman from 1988 to 1997. Allen graduated from Wabash College in 1957 with a bachelor's degree in political science and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1994. He was also recognized by Condé Nast Portfolio as the 12th worst American CEO in April 2009.
