Robert Fano (11 November 1917 – 13 July 2016) was an Italian-American computer scientist recognized for his contributions to information theory, including the Shannon–Fano coding and the Fano inequality. He was a professor at MIT's Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department until retiring in June 2008. In the early 1960s, he contributed to time-sharing computer systems and co-founded the MIT Project Mac, which eventually led to the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. He received several academic honors, including membership in the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences.
