He studied at Battersea Polytechnic and Imperial College London, obtaining his Bachelor's in engineering and his PhD in 1950. He worked on analytical problems in soil mechanics, particularly during the pre-computer era, addressing issues in areas such as dam construction and soil consolidation. Gibson was a professor at King's College London and held a D.Sc. He was also recognized with several awards, including the John Booker Medal and was a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
