Robert Jumel was a member of the Free French Forces during World War II, serving as a non-commissioned officer. He joined the Leclerc column in Chad in November 1941 and participated in operations in Fezzan and Tunisia, earning multiple commendations for his bravery. Later, he served in the 2nd Armored Division in Morocco and contributed to the campaign in France. Jumel was killed in action by a machine-gun fire during a patrol in Baccarat on November 2, 1944. He was posthumously recognized as a Companion of the Liberation and buried in Bertrichamps cemetery.
